Porcelain Veneers in Harriman, NY
Porcelain veneers–also called dental veneers–are the most powerful procedure in cosmetic dentistry. Not only can they treat many of the most common cosmetic complaints, but they can treat them all at once. And they often do it better than other treatment options. Plus, they give results that can last for ten years, twenty years, or more when properly cared for. Short of missing teeth, there is virtually no cosmetic complaint that porcelain veneers can’t fix.

What Porcelain Veneers Can Do
Porcelain veneers can be used for nearly any cosmetic problem. They can be used to treat:
- Discolored teeth
- Chipped or cracked teeth
- Small or poorly shaped teeth
- Tooth gaps or crooked teeth
And many other situations where you want to dramatically change the appearance of your smile. Porcelain veneers have the ability to give you an entirely new smile in a single procedure, which is why sometimes people call them a smile makeover.
Benefits for Whitening
Most people think that teeth whitening is the best way to get their teeth whitened, but there are many ways that porcelain veneers beat teeth whitening. First, teeth whitening is limited by the natural color of your teeth–they can only get so white. But porcelain veneers can be whiter than your natural teeth, and, really, as white as you want them.
Teeth whitening only affects staining on the outside of your teeth, but porcelain veneers can whiten teeth that are discolored from within.
Teeth whitening results only last a few months, but porcelain veneers can last ten years or more, resisting stains and maintaining their white color.
Benefits for Chipped Teeth
It’s true that dental bonding has some benefits for treating chipped teeth, but overall porcelain veneers are a better approach. Porcelain veneers last longer and look more attractive. They’re more stain resistant and give more consistent results.
Benefits for Small Teeth
When you’re building up small teeth, the strength difference between dental bonding and porcelain veneers is even more significant. The more material that has to be used to build up the tooth, the more likely that dental bonding will fail prematurely. It’s also harder to achieve an attractive appearance and more likely that staining will ruin the restoration.
Benefits for Gaps and Crooked Teeth
If you want to straighten your smile and close gaps between your teeth, you might turn to orthodontics. But porcelain veneers have many advantages over traditional orthodontics. While orthodontics can take six months, a year, or more to complete, porcelain veneers can be complete in a month or less–that’s why they’re sometimes called “instant orthodontics.” And meanwhile you don’t have to deal with the hassle of orthodontics such as diet restrictions and special hygiene requirements.
With orthodontics, you’re stuck with your teeth as they are. But with porcelain veneers, you can whiten and reshape your teeth at the same time you have them straightened, allowing you to truly get the smile you desire.
And with porcelain veneers, you don’t have to wear a retainer after your procedure is complete. When it’s done, it’s done.
How Porcelain Veneers Work
Porcelain veneers are thin facades of advanced ceramic materials that are bonded to the front of your teeth.
Before we design your veneers, we will first talk to you about your cosmetic goals and evaluate your smile to decide how many porcelain veneers will be necessary to achieve your goals. Once we have decided on the treatment plan, we will schedule you to have your teeth prepared. This involves removing some of your tooth enamel so that your veneers will fit snugly on the surface of your teeth without creating any ledges or shelves that can accumulate plaque.
With one type of porcelain veneer, called Lumineers, it may not be necessary to remove any tooth enamel at all. This is good, but it does limit the situations in which Lumineers are appropriate.
Once your teeth are prepared, we will take impressions of your teeth, which are sent to a lab and used to craft your custom veneers.
We will fit you with temporary veneers that can serve until your permanent veneers are ready, which can take two weeks.
When your permanent veneers are ready, we will remove your temporaries and have you try on your permanent veneers to make sure they meet your expectations and our design parameters. If we’re all happy with the veneers, then we will bond them to your teeth.
How Durable Are Porcelain Veneers?
Many people think that because they have the word “porcelain” in the name, dental veneers are fragile. But porcelain just refers to the whiteness of the veneers, not the specific type of ceramic used. Dental veneers are made of very advanced ceramics that can be very strong and also very attractive. One popular veneer material has a strength of 58,000 pounds per square inch. For comparison, tooth enamel has, at most, a strength of only 7100 pounds per square inch.
In other words, today’s dental veneers are eight times as strong as your tooth enamel.
As a result, dental veneers are very long-lasting with a low rate of failure.
